When people have asked my opinions about their characters (often specifically if I consider them as Mary Sues or not, thanks to my tutorial about avoiding Mary Sues), a reoccurring theme in those conversations has been the character flaws. A frequent (and rather crude) definition of Mary Sue is "Mary Sue is a character without prominent flaws", and I would add, "without prominent character flaws".
